What you'll do

Location: Horten or Oslo Workload: Full-time, 37.5 hours/week Start date: 1 November 2026 About the role We are looking for a Usability Engineer (Hardware Human Factors) to own the physical human factors and ergonomics for a handheld, wireless ultrasound probe portfolio. You will shape how the next generation of probes fit the hand, the workflow, and the clinical environment; ensuring safe, effective, efficient, and intuitive use. This role leads Formative and Summative usability activities within a QMS-controlled medical device development process, translating user insights into actionable Design Inputs and Risk Management outputs. You will partner closely with mechanical engineering, industrial design, probe systems engineering and collaborate seamlessly with an App/Software Usability Engineer to deliver an end-to-end probe-plus-app user experience. Key responsibilities

  • Lead usability engineering for new handheld wireless ultrasound probes, owning the ergonomics and user-facing physical design.
  • Plan, create, and evaluate probe form factors against user requirements, anthropometrics, and biomechanics (grip, push/pull/lift forces, prolonged-scanning fatigue), including glove and sterile-field use.
  • Drive Formative and Summative usability testing for probe use scenarios (planning, execution, analysis, and reporting).
  • Translate findings into Design Inputs, use-related risk mitigations, and supporting documentation.
  • Provide direction and input to mechanical designers, industrial designers, and probe systems engineers on user-facing design decisions.
  • Engage with clinical users and experts to continuously optimize ergonomics, disinfection/reprocessing usability, and overall ease of use.
  • Collaborate across Product Management, Engineering, Clinical, Regulatory, Marketing, and Quality in a global, cross-site environment

Required qualifications

  • Master’s degree in Human Factors Engineering, Ergonomics, Industrial Design, Biomedical Engineering, or a related field.
  • Hands-on experience with usability evaluation of medical device hardware, ideally handheld or wearable wireless devices.
  • Working knowledge of IEC 62366-1, ANSI/AAMI HE75, and FDA Human Factors and Usability Engineering guidance.
  • Experience validating physical product designs with clinical users, including planning and reporting Formative and Summative activities under a quality-managed process.
  • Proven ability to translate usability findings into Design Inputs and Risk Management deliverables.
  • Fluent professional English (written and spoken).
  • Comfortable with standard office and collaboration tools.

Nice to have

  • PhD in a relevant field.
  • Prior work on handheld wireless ultrasound probes or comparable clinical hand tools.
  • Familiarity with sterile/gloved/wet-environment use, disinfection workflows, and wireless-charging ergonomics.
  • Experience defending usability work under external audit (FDA, Notified Body).
  • Certification in Human Factors Engineering (e.g., BCPE) or similar accreditation.
  • Familiarity with CAD/PLM review environments and statistical/usability analysis tools.
  • Norwegian is welcomed but not required; candidates open to relocation are encouraged to apply.

Personal attributes

  • Laser-sharp attention to detail in medical device design.
  • Rigor and calm authority in cross-functional design reviews.
  • Curiosity and empathy for clinical users and their real-world environments.
  • Diplomatic, collaborative style—able to build strong peer partnerships across hardware, software, and design.

Why join You will own the hardware human factors and ergonomics of a globally deployed, high-impact point-of-care ultrasound product—directly influencing how clinicians worldwide work with the next generation of probes, in close collaboration with a senior, multidisciplinary team. How to apply Submit your CV and a brief note summarizing your relevant hardware usability / human factors experience.
