In addition to offering summer internships, we have students working part-time with us alongside their studies, as well as students writing their bachelor and master thesis with us. This gives great benefits both for Q-Free and for our interns. Your role with us in our Tolling Technology Products department Our Tolling Technology Products department develops products and technologies for intelligent transportation systems, with a focus on tolling and road user charging solutions. Our product portfolio includes onboard equipment, such as tolling tags, as well as roadside systems including DSRC transceivers and supporting infrastructure. We work across the entire product development lifecycle, from early concepts and prototypes to testing, verification, and deployment of customer-ready products. This means working with electronics, embedded software, RF systems, computer vision, and cloud-connected technologies in multidisciplinary teams. As a Summer Intern, you will work alongside experienced engineers on real development projects. Depending on your background and interests, you may contribute to electronics design, embedded programming, laboratory testing, RF measurements, automation, data analysis, or prototype development. Q-Free is also developing next-generation Road User Charging systems, where traditional tolling technologies are combined with IoT, positioning systems, and connected services to enable reliable, secure, and fair mobility solutions for the future. Some of the work we do in our Tolling Technology Products department

  • Electronics design, simulation, and prototyping
  • Firmware and embedded software development, ranging from bare-metal applications to RTOS-based systems
  • Testing and characterization of electronics, including power consumption, RF performance, EMC, and system-level verification
  • RF measurements, antenna characterization, and wireless communication systems
  • Development of automated test systems and verification tools using Python
  • Software development for user interfaces, control systems, and supporting tools
  • GNSS and positioning technologies for intelligent transportation applications
  • System integration and validation of hardware and software solutions
  • Taking products from concept and prototype through testing, verification, and deployment

We are looking for candidates with an interest in one or more of the following fields

  • Electronics design, schematic capture, PCB layout, and circuit simulation
  • Embedded programming using C/C++, Python, Linux, Docker, and CI/CD tools
  • Radio technology, signal processing, antennas, and wireless communications
  • Positioning technologies such as GNSS, IMUs, and sensor fusion
  • Prototype development and testing using Raspberry Pi, 3D printing, and laboratory equipment
  • Test planning, measurements, and data analysis
  • Cybersecurity and secure systems

Practical information The internship period will be from June 14th until August 13th, with two weeks’ vacation in week 28 and 29. The workplace is our headquarters in Trondheim. Q-Free is part of a collaborative project in Trondheim called Workation. Workation offers a unique summer program, and all summer interns who join Q-Free in 2027 will have full and free access to these activities. Last summer, our summer interns were free to join activities such as volleyball and padel, kayaking, beer tasting, and more. Workation also offers a great arena to meet summer interns working for other companies and make new friends.
