We are looking for technical anchor who will build the best-in-class data platform for hospitals
Health DataCore (HDC) is a Copenhagen-based health-tech company building a data platform that enables better treatment and management of patients.
That means our platform must do two things at once: Provide easy access to harmonized data about patients across systems, and stand up to the scrutiny that comes with handling patient data in a regulated environment – parts of the platform will be classified as medical device software.
We are now putting together the delivery team that will build it. We're looking for a Senior Backend Engineer to be that team's technical anchor – the person who turns architecture into working, well-built and auditable software, and helps everyone around them do the same.
Why this role is different
We've deliberately chosen a lean, role-based setup rather than a traditional engineering hierarchy. A Product Manager owns what we build and why. A Solution Architect owns the overall architecture. And a small delivery team builds it, working with a Scrum Master who is also the team’s People Manager.
As Senior Backend Engineer, you sit at the centre of that model. You are the primary point of contact between the delivery team and the Solution Architect on how the architecture actually gets built – translating design intent into implementation, flagging early when something won't work in practice, and making sure what we ship matches what we designed.
You'll be hands-on most of the time. But you'll also be the person the team turns to when a technical problem gets hard, a decision needs making, or the right way forward isn't obvious.
What you'll be working on
- Leading the implementation of core backend services – APIs, business logic and integrations
- Building and maintaining core parts of our platform
- Making implementation-level design decisions – and documenting them so they can be understood, reviewed and audited later
- Owning code quality: review practices, testing strategy, coding standards and technical debt
- Designing for traceability, audit logging, access control and data integrity from day one
- Owning how the platform is packaged and deployed – containers, CI/CD and infrastructure as code – so it runs the same way in a customer's cloud or on-premises environment
- Building two-way integrations with hospital systems, including electronic health records – typically via HL7 or FHIR
- Contributing to the software documentation that our medical device and regulatory work depends on
- Working closely with the Solution Architect to refine the architecture based on what we learn in implementation
- Acting as the natural technical escalation point for the delivery team
- Mentoring and developing junior developers as the team grows
What we're looking for
- We care more about how you build software than which framework you build it in.
- We imagine you have around seven years or more of professional backend development experience – some of it leading implementation or setting the technical standard for others – and strong engineering fundamentals: API design, data modelling, integrations, testing, security, and running software reliably in production.
- You understand what it takes to build auditable systems in health care. You understand why audit trails, traceability, access control and documented decisions matter when software handles patient data – and you know how to build them in without bringing delivery to a halt.
- You enjoy making pragmatic design decisions and writing them down; raising the bar on code quality through reviews and example rather than gatekeeping; working closely with architects and product people and challenging them when needed; and helping junior developers grow as the team expands.
- Experience with regulated software, preferably from life-science or health industries, is a strong plus – as is experience with GDPR in a health data context, with health data standards such as HL7 FHIR, and with running services in containers on Azure.
What you'll get
- Real influence on how it gets built. You'll be the one translating architecture into working software, and your implementation decisions will shape the platform for years to come.
- A clear role in a lean setup. No layers of management between you and the decisions. You'll work directly with the Solution Architect and Product Manager.
- The chance to shape a team. You'll be one of the first members of the delivery team and help set its standards, habits and culture.
- Work that matters. Health data, handled well, can improve care and research. Handling it well is a genuinely hard engineering problem.
- Regulated-domain craft. Building software that is both quick to develop and audit-ready is a skill few engineers get to practise properly. Here, it's the job.
About HDC
HDC is an early-stage company, but not starting from nothing: the platform builds on clinical decision-support systems developed at Rigshospitalet and in daily clinical use there for years. Our task is to turn proven clinical software into a product that can run safely in any hospital. The team is small, and the two engineers we're hiring now will be in the room for the early decisions.
HDC exists to make health data easier to use – securely, compliantly and in a way that clinicians, researchers and patients can trust.
We're building a platform where quality, traceability and regulatory compliance are part of the foundation, not something bolted on afterwards.
Practical details
- Location: Copenhagen.
- Hybrid: 2–3 regular days a week on site.
- Full-time, permanent position. Start as soon as possible, by agreement.
- Working language is English. Danish is a plus, since the source systems and their documentation are in Danish.
- You must be eligible to work in Denmark.
- Applications are reviewed continuously, and the role closes when it's filled.
