Senior Backend Developer

At Evam, we build mission-critical technology for police, ambulance, fire & rescue, and other public safety organisations. Our software helps first responders manage complex, time-critical incidents every day. We’re looking for a Senior Backend Developer to help build and shape the systems that need to work flawlessly when it matters most. You’ll work across our backend platform using Kotlin, Spring Boot 4, MongoDB and Kubernetes on Azure AKS. You’ll have real influence over architecture, data modelling, reliability, observability and how we operate services in production. This is a hands-on senior role with significant autonomy. You won’t just implement tickets — you’ll help set the engineering standard for the team. What you’ll do

• Design and build reliable, scalable backend services
• Make key architectural and technical decisions
• Improve performance, resilience, observability and testability
• Review code and collaborate on complex engineering challenges
• Help ensure our systems are safe, stable and ready for production
• Use modern AI tools to accelerate development, debugging, code review and incident investigation

What we’re looking for

• 5+ years of backend engineering experience
• Strong experience with Kotlin and Spring Boot
• Production experience with MongoDB
• Hands-on experience with Kubernetes and containerised services
• Strong understanding of CI/CD, automated testing and distributed systems
• Experience with performance, reliability and observability
• Active use of AI development tools such as Claude Code, Codex or Cursor
• Strong English communication skills
• A proactive mindset and a high level of technical ownership

Nice to have

• Experience in safety-critical, regulated or high-availability environments
• Experience defining architecture across multiple services or teams
• Broader cloud and observability experience
