PhD Candidate

We are seeking a highly motivated PhD candidate to join the Electricity Markets and Energy System Planning (EMESP) research group at the Department of Electric Energy, NTNU, in Trondheim, Norway. The PhD project focuses on developing and applying artificial intelligence, machine learning, and advanced optimization methods for long-term hydropower scheduling and decision-making under uncertainty. The research will contribute to improved methods for operating hydropower resources in future power systems with increasing shares of variable renewable energy. The position is particularly suitable for candidates with a strong background in artificial intelligence, machine learning, optimization, operations research, energy systems, power systems, or related quantitative fields. The successful candidate will work at the intersection of: • Artificial intelligence and machine learning • Long-term hydropower scheduling • Optimization and decision-support methods • Uncertainty modelling • Electricity markets and energy systems • Integration of renewable energy resources The PhD candidate will become part of the EMESP research group at NTNU and work in an interdisciplinary research environment combining energy-system modelling, optimization, electricity markets, hydropower, and AI-supported methods.
