What you'll do

Medical Officer – AKIGAI AS, Oslo AKIGAI is looking for a physician AKIGAI aims to change the lives of people living with neuropathic pain. Our mission is to bring an EGFR-inhibitor for the treatment of neuropathic pain to as many patients as possible, as fast as possible. Our founders are oncologists who, through a chance observation, found that EGFR-inhibitors can relieve neuropathic pain. More than a decade of clinical experience later, AKIGAI is developing this approach into a new, non-opioid treatment for the millions of patients with neuropathic pain who need better options. Our lead program, AKI-007 (SEARPS™), is a low-dose reformulation of afatinib. Its development will start in complex regional pain syndrome (CRPS), a rare condition with no approved drug treatment. AKIGAI holds orphan drug designation for CRPS in the US and EU. Following recent FDA clearance of our IND, a Phase 2b/3 trial in CRPS will start at US sites in early 2027. In parallel, we are preparing a European early access program and further Phase 2 trials in neuropathic pain, as well as developing a second-generation anti-EGFR antibody. The role You will work closely with our Chief Medical Officer and with the CEO, as well as the rest of the Team. You will share medical responsibility across our programs and act as medical deputy to the CMO. Your work will focus on three areas:

  • Clinical trials: planning and conducting the Phase 2b/3 trial in CRPS and new Phase 2 trials, including in neuropathic cancer pain and pediatric neuropathic pain. This includes medical monitoring, eligibility and safety review, and medical support to the CRO and trial sites.
  • Early access in Europe: planning and running a European early access program, including medical support to treating physicians and safety follow-up.
  • Investigators and physicians: diligent follow-up of investigators, treating physicians and key opinion leaders in Europe and the US.

You will also:

  • Contribute to protocols, investigator brochures, regulatory submissions and other clinical documents.
  • Provide medical input to pharmacovigilance, partnering discussions and investor communication.
  • Contribute to scientific publications and presentations.

You are:

  • Purpose-driven: motivated by bringing a new treatment to patients.
  • Hard-working: committed and willing to put in the effort it takes to deliver, especially around key milestones.
  • Flexible: comfortable with travel and meetings outside normal working hours, given our close collaboration with international partners and trial sites.
  • Creative: able to find new solutions when there is no established way of doing things.
  • A team player: open to learning and happy to contribute wherever the team needs you, in a small company where everyone works across roles.
  • Thorough: careful with medical detail, documentation and follow-up.

Your background

  • Medical degree, with authorization to practice in Norway.
  • Clinical experience in pain medicine, neurology, anesthesiology, rehabilitation medicine, or palliative care.
  • Experience with clinical trials, as an investigator, medical monitor or in industry, and working knowledge of ICH-GCP.
  • Excellent written and spoken English. Norwegian or another Scandinavian language is an advantage.
  • A PhD, or experience with pharmacovigilance or regulatory interactions, is an advantage.

AKIGAI offers

  • A journey where you help create activities that can change the lives of millions of people.
  • Work you have never done before, in a company taking a first-in-class therapy towards approval.
  • Autonomy and room for creativity.
  • Close collaboration with the founders and an international network of pain experts.
  • Participation in the company's share option program.
  • A base in Oslo.
