Master Thesis: Semi-Automated Code Review and Quality Assessment for Reusable Validation Modules

Join our Team About This Opportunity Useful Python components are continuously developed within validation projects: instrument drivers, protocol interfaces, utilities, and framework extensions. Many of these components could be reused by other teams, but turning project-specific code into a contribution to a shared validation framework can require significant additional effort. Contributors need to understand and follow framework conventions, coding guidelines, documentation requirements, and interface rules. At the same time, a limited number of experienced reviewers often spend valuable time identifying basic and repetitive issues before they can focus on architecture, maintainability, and engineering decisions. In this Master Thesis, you will build and evaluate a semi-automated contribution assistant that bridges the gap between contributors and reviewers. The goal is to make contributing easier, make reviewing lighter, and help transform useful project code into high-quality, reusable components for our validation framework. What You Will Do You will develop a user-friendly workflow that performs an initial quality assessment together with the contributor before the code reaches a human reviewer. The solution should combine deterministic software engineering tools, framework-specific rules, and AI-assisted analysis where it adds value. Areas of exploration could include, but are not limited to:

• Analyzing contributions using formatting, linting, type checking, testing, and static-analysis tools.
• Checking documentation, interfaces, code structure, dependencies, and compliance with framework guidelines.
• Providing clear, actionable feedback that explains issues and guides contributors toward a review-ready contribution.
• Suggesting or automatically applying suitable fixes and allowing contributors to iterate before requesting human review.
• Using existing AI-assisted development technologies for context-aware explanations and suggestions where deterministic rules are not sufficient.
• Generating a structured pre-review summary showing what was checked, what was changed, and what still requires human engineering judgment.
• Evaluating the solution using representative validation-framework contributions and measuring factors such as contributor effort, reviewer time, review iterations, detected issues, false positives, final code quality, and usability.

The final result should be a practical prototype that can be evaluated in a real validation environment. The intention is not to replace human reviewers, but to let automation handle routine work so experienced engineers can focus on the decisions that require engineering expertise. The Skills You Bring

• Studies in Computer Science, Software Engineering, Electrical Engineering, or a related field.
• Experience with Python and general software-development practices.
• Interest in software quality, automation, static analysis, developer tooling, or code-review workflows.
• Ability and curiosity to understand an existing codebase, development guidelines, and engineering workflow.
• Eagerness to build a practical, user-friendly solution and evaluate it systematically.
• Bonus: experience with AI-assisted development tools, language models, static-analysis tools, or validation/test automation.
