Master thesis: FE-model of perforations in corrugated board Assignment The aim of this project is to develop a finite element (FE) model of perforations in corrugated board packaging, simulating the tearing process that occurs during opening. Project activities include model development in commercial FE software and experimental validation of the model. Purpose of project This project is a collaboration between RISE (Research Institutes of Sweden) and DS Smith. DS Smith is a global leading provider of sustainable packaging solutions made of corrugated board, a lightweight, yet high performing sandwich structure made mainly from recycled fibres. Finite element (FE) simulations are becoming an increasingly important tool for accelerating product design and innovation. Several approaches of modelling the structural performance of corrugated packaging already exist. Perforated packaging has been studied in terms of its impact on the load-bearing capacity, but not the opening of the perforations themselves. To ensure that packaging remains both visually appealing and functional, it is important to understand how perforations should be designed to produce a controlled and predictable tear. Corrugated board and packaging performance are active research areas at RISE, where research activities are undertaken in close collaboration with the industry. The method developed in this project is expected to provide industry with a valuable tool for designing and optimising perforated packaging solutions. Throughout the project, you will work closely with researchers from both RISE and DS Smith, who will support you in the project start-up and in the development of both numerical and experimental methods. The following activities are proposed for the project.
Who are you? We are looking for one master student within the area of solid mechanics, lightweight structures, or equivalent. A strong background in numerical analysis, modelling, and simulation is essential. The start date is January 2027 or based on mutual agreement. Terms The master thesis will be carried out at RISE in Kista, corresponding to 30 ECTs. For the approved work, a stipend will be awarded. Supervisors Gustav Marin (gustav.marin@ri.se), +46 76 876 71 99 Magdalena Kaplan (magdalena.kaplan@dssmith.com), 08 568 232 24 Welcome to apply The application deadline is 20 October 2026. Applications will be reviewed on an ongoing basis, and the position may be filled before the closing date. We therefore encourage interested candidates to submit their applications as soon as possible.
