What you'll do

Introduction and Background A thesis project at TRATON provides a unique opportunity to gain practical experience, expand your professional network, and contribute to the future of sustainable transportation. Many of our current employees began their careers at Traton by completing their degree projects within the organization. TRATON Group includes leading commercial vehicle brands such as Scania, MAN, Volkswagen Truck & Bus, and International. Together, we are committed to driving the transformation toward sustainable transport solutions. As a thesis student, you will work closely with experienced engineers and specialists, contributing to real-world product development while gaining valuable industry experience. For more information, visit www.traton.com. Thesis Objective The objective of this thesis is to develop a prototype Battery Management System (BMS) for a 24V lithium-ion battery system using existing hardware and software tools available within the organization. In addition, the thesis will evaluate whether the current in-house software algorithms for State of Charge (SoC) and State of Health (SoH) estimation can be applied to a 24V lithium-ion battery system. The work will help assess the suitability of existing solutions and identify improvements required for future low-voltage battery management applications. Job Description This thesis is primarily focused on practical development, testing, and verification activities. Your work will include:

  • Developing a functional hardware setup that can operate as a Battery Management System (BMS) prototype.
  • Collecting and analyzing information about existing in-house SoC and SoH estimation methods.
  • Verifying the compatibility of current software running in the Battery Management Unit (BMU) and Energy Management Systems with a 24V lithium-ion battery architecture.
  • Identifying and proposing software improvements or modifications required for 24V battery system applications.
  • Investigating and benchmarking available SoC and SoH estimation techniques used in low-voltage battery systems across the industry.

Expected Deliverables The thesis is expected to result in:

  • A functional hardware setup demonstrating Battery Management System capabilities using currently available tools and components.
  • An evaluation of existing SoH estimation methods, including recommendations for reducing computational complexity, processing time, and implementation effort while maintaining estimation accuracy.
  • A compatibility assessment of current software solutions for 24V lithium-ion battery systems.
  • Recommendations for future software development and implementation strategies.

Education / Program / Qualifications We are looking for a curious, motivated, and hands-on student with a strong interest in battery technology, embedded systems, electrical architecture, and sustainable transportation. You enjoy solving technical challenges, working across disciplines, and combining theoretical knowledge with practical implementation. You are comfortable working independently while maintaining effective communication with supervisors and project stakeholders. Preferred Qualifications

  • Basic understanding of vehicle electrical architectures and 24V electrical systems.
  • Familiarity with modeling and simulation tools such as MATLAB.
  • Experience with MATLAB scripting.
  • Basic understanding of CAN communication and CANalyzer.
  • Interest in battery technology, energy storage systems, and battery management systems.
  • Fluency in English, both written and spoken.

Students from various engineering disciplines and educational backgrounds are encouraged to apply. Thesis Start Date January 2027 / February 2027 The exact start date and project timeline will be agreed upon between TRATON, the selected candidate, and the academic institution.
