What you'll do

We are looking for a Doctoral student to conduct groundbreaking research on novel perovskite redox materials for hydrogen production. The project is multidisciplinary, and you will collaborate with leading researchers with extensive and internationally recognized expertise within a pan-European consortium aiming to demonstrate the technology at pilot scale. About us You will be employed at the Division of Energy Technology, which is part of the Department of Environmental and Energy Sciences. The Division of Energy Technology has approximately 80 employees, including around 30 doctoral students. We conduct research and offer education primarily in the fields of energy technology and energy systems. Our research focuses on biomass combustion and gasification, carbon dioxide mitigation technologies, high-temperature processes, energy transition, and sustainable energy systems. A considerable part of our research is experimental, and to support this work we have developed and maintain unique research facilities, including the Chalmers research boiler/gasifier and several chemical-looping pilot reactors. We also conduct systems-level research projects involving in-depth studies of energy conversion processes. Our research areas are characterized by a strong demand for new, efficient, and environmentally sustainable technologies, rapid changes in the political and economic landscape, and an urgent need to bring existing solutions into practical implementation. The current doctoral student position is collaborative in nature and also involves activities conducted at the Division of Chemical Physics and the Division of Energy and Materials. About the research project The announced positions are part of the project “Enabling Negative Emissions with Hydrogen Production by Advanced Chemical Looping (ENHANCE)”, a major collaborative project involving ten partners and funded through the Clean Energy Transition Partnership (CETP), a large EU-supported research initiative. The aim is to develop novel perovskite oxides with thermochemical properties suitable for hydrogen production from biogenic resources with inherent CO2 capture. You will use advanced characterization and evaluation techniques, data mining, and generative machine learning models to establish an active learning framework for identifying materials with the required properties. Promising candidates will be synthesized, characterized, and evaluated in the laboratory. Your work will help establish the concept as a viable technology for the sustainable and efficient production of hydrogen. Subsequently, project partners will implement the materials in small- and medium-scale pilot units. Who we are looking for

  • By the starting date, the applicant should have a MSc degree corresponding to at least 240 ECTS credits in a subject relevant for the project content (e.g. chemistry, physics, chemical engineering, engineering physics, material science, energy engineering, or alike).
  • The position requires excellent verbal and written communication skills in English.
  • Experience with machine learning algorithms and coding for material applications is highly meritorious.
  • Experience of work in chemistry lab environment (e.g. material synthesis, material characterization), or experience in ab-initio and DFT calculations of solid materials, are both meritorious.

What you will do Your primary responsibility as a doctoral student is to pursue your own research studies. This includes developing your own scientific concepts and communicating the results of your research verbally and in writing. You are expected to write scientific articles, a mid-term licentiate thesis and defend your doctoral thesis in five years. The position also includes teaching in Chalmers' undergraduate programs and departmental duties, corresponding to a maximum of 20 % of the working time in total. You will also take courses at an advanced level within the Graduate school of Energy, Environment and Systems (Energy, Environment and Systems | Chalmers). Contract terms

  • The Doctoral student positions are fully funded from start.

- The position is a fixed-term appointment of four years. However, you are expected to teach in Chalmers' undergraduate programmes and perform other departmental duties corresponding to a maximum of 20% of your working time, which extend the period of employment to up to five years.

  • A starting salary of 35,725 SEK per month (valid from May 1, 2026).
  • Doctoral studies require physical presence throughout the entire study period. A valid residence permit must be presented by the study start date; otherwise the admission may be withdrawn.
