What you'll do

We invite applications for two Doctoral positions in experimental quantum computing with superconducting circuits. You will work in the stimulating research environment of the Wallenberg Centre for Quantum Technology (WACQT), a 12-year initiative started in 2018 with the purpose of advancing Swedish academia and industry to the forefront of quantum technology. The core project of the centre is to build a quantum computer based on superconducting circuits. You will be part of the Quantum Computing group in the Quantum Technology Laboratory (QTL) division of the Microtechnology and Nanoscience (MC2) department, working in a large team of PhDs, postdocs and researchers. About us The Department of Microtechnology and Nanoscience advances the frontiers in quantum technology, nanoscience, photonics and future electronic systems - for technical and societal development. Our cross-disciplinary approach gives interesting collaborations in academy, industry and society, and is a driving force for innovations, results and breakthroughs. We offer a vibrant, international research environment and direct access to world-class nanofabrication facilities. At the Quantum Technology Laboratory, we explore how quantum physics can unlock radically new ways of processing information - far beyond the limits of classical systems. Our research spans quantum computing, sensing, transduction, thermodynamics, and foundations, all aimed at harnessing the powerful behavior of light and matter at the quantum level. We offer a vibrant, international research environment and direct access to world-class nanofabrication facilities. About the research project We are seeking Doctoral students to work on building the next generation of large-scale quantum processors based on superconducting circuits. To achieve this ambitious goal, we currently have projects related to:

  • Development and optimization of nano-fabrication processes for superconducting devices
  • Design and microwave simulation of quantum processors

Who we are looking for The following requirements are mandatory:

  • To qualify as a Doctoral student, you must have a Master's degree (masterexamen) of 120 credits or a Master’s degree (magisterexamen) of 60 credits* in Physics, Applied Physics, Nanotechnology.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills in English
  • Experience in one or more of the following areas: superconducting circuits, experimental quantum computing, quantum optics, or a related field within experimental physics.
  • You are passionate about quantum technology and eager to contribute to its future development.
  • You thrive in a collaborative environment, enjoy sharing knowledge, and take responsibility for your work.
  • You have a strong analytical mindset, pay attention to detail, and enjoy tackling complex challenges.
  • You are keen to contribute to the development of students through supervision and mentoring.
  • for students with an education earned outside of Sweden, a 4-year Bachelor’s degree is accepted.

The following experience will strengthen your application:

  • Experience in nanofabrication, microwave measurements, cryogenics, microwave simulations, experimental quantum computing

What you will do

  • Take courses at an advanced level within the Graduate school of the Department of Microtechnology and Nanoscience
  • Develop your own scientific concepts and communicate the results of your research verbally and in writing
  • The position generally also includes teaching on Chalmers' undergraduate level or performing other duties corresponding to 20 percent of working hours
  • Contribute to the development of next-generation superconducting quantum processors, working in one of the following research areas:
  • Nanofabrication of superconducting quantum devices: Develop and optimize fabrication processes to improve device performance, reproducibility, and scalability. Investigate different materials and fabrication techniques to understand and mitigate sources of loss in superconducting circuits.
  • Design and simulation of quantum processors: Design superconducting circuits and perform electromagnetic and microwave simulations to optimize device performance and support the development of larger-scale quantum processors.
  • Work closely with experimentalists, theorists, and engineers in an interdisciplinary research environment, contributing to the development and testing of quantum hardware.

Contract terms

  • The Doctoral student positions are fully funded from start.
  • The position is a fixed-term appointment of four years, with the possibility to teach up to 20%, which extends the position up to five years.
  • A starting salary of 35,725 SEK per month (valid from May 1, 2026).
  • Doctoral studies require physical presence throughout the entire study period. A valid residence permit must be presented by the study start date; otherwise the admission may be withdrawn.
