Data Engineer – Customer Data Products (Contract)

The role You'll focus on customer classification and unified customer profiles – building the pipelines, governance and data quality foundations behind them. It's primarily hands-on engineering, with a meaningful share of analytics, governance and stakeholder work. You'll help set and drive adoption of data engineering standards alongside data engineers, data stewards, product owners and software engineers. What you'll do

• Build, improve and maintain ingestion and transformation pipelines in SQL/Python (BigQuery, dbt, Databricks), plus ad-hoc analytics
• Review and improve processes end to end – from coding practices to infrastructure
• Define and implement data engineering standards across ingestion, transformation, data quality and data contracts
• Review data models, contracts and mappings for alignment with governance standards
• Present data product, data quality and governance standards and insights to stakeholders
• Partner with product, engineering and data teams to advocate data product principles and resolve misalignment

What you'll bring Must-haves:

• Strong data engineering fundamentals – production-grade pipelines in dbt and Python on cloud (GCP preferred), CI/CD, IaC, containerisation
• Hands-on BigQuery and/or Databricks/PySpark (both strongly preferred)
• Comfort with ambiguity – you're energised by problems that are still being shaped, not overwhelmed by them

• Data quality frameworks – defining rules, writing tests, investigating failures
• Solid grasp of data modelling, warehousing and how data flows across systems
• Smart, disciplined use of AI to improve coding, review and testing workflows
• Data visualisation basics (Looker Studio; Power BI a big plus)
• Customer data experience – profiles, purchase and interaction events
• Classification and unified profile data products
• Data governance, metadata management and cataloguing
• Strong communicator who can translate business requirements into data products, quality rules and standards, and drive issues to resolution across stakeholders
