The University of Jyväskylä (JYU) is a public research university founded in 1863 as a teacher training college, later gaining full university status in 1934. It is based in the city of Jyväskylä in Central Finland and has grown into one of the country’s leading multidisciplinary institutions. JYU serves over 14,000 degree students, supported by about 2,500 staff members, including 800 teaching and research staff. The university is organised into six faculties: Humanities and Social Sciences, Information Technology, Education and Psychology, Sport and Health Sciences, Mathematics and Science, and Business and Economics. JYU is particularly noted for its research in education, teacher training, natural sciences, sport and health sciences, and human technology interaction. The campus is located near Lake Jyväsjärvi, with a blend of Alvar Aalto–designed historic buildings and modern facilities.
